FLASH BACK: 54 YEARS OF COUNTER COUP. HOW ADEKUNLE FAJUYI AND AGUIYI IRONSI WERE KILLED

On 29th July, 1966, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, first military Governor of Western Region was assassinated in a counter coup, led mainly by northern military officers.
It is on record that Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi made a great personal sacrifice for peace between the Igbos and the Yoruba race. Fajuyi proved his loyalty to his boss AGUIYI IRONSI.

GEN. Aguiyi Ironsi visited Ibadan to address a conference of traditional rulers. At 4am Soldiers led by T. Y Danjuma and Joe Garba drove into Government house Agodi Ibadan.
Their mission was to kidnap and kill Ironsi in a reprisal coup..
The Loyalty, sacrifice, courage of Adekunle Fajuyi set in by defending Ironsi his boss.
How could he stand at an akimbo while his boss, his quest, his mentor, his supreme commander was to be killed by the Hausa/fulani soldiers under his roof.
He refused. It would have given rise to Yoruba and Igbo suspicious and everlasting hatred, woven into a conspiratory theory.
Adekunle Fajuyi jumped into the open Land Rover conveying his boss even as the Hausa/ fulani soldiers barked at him to stay away or be killed with his master.

Adekunle Fajuyi preferred to die with his master Aguiyi Ironsi that to stay alive and see Ironsi killed by the Hausa/fulani.
He forced himself into the vehicle as the murderers drove away with him and Ironsi.
Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi was a brave and courageous man who sacrificed his life for the peace of the Igbos and the Yorubas.
